The Barn

Matahiwi Barn’s owners looked at a 19th century farm building that was gradually falling to bits in a paddock and saw a sumptuous four-bedroom, three-bathroom country house that sleeps up to nine.

Both upstairs bedrooms have Queen beds and the master bedroom has a King. All three have en suite bathrooms. The fourth bedroom contains a single bed and bunks. A cot is also available. The Queen rooms open off a book-lined gallery that overlooks a living space lavishly furnished with Persian rugs, antiques, comfortable sofas and chairs, original works of art, sound system, piano and a hefty wood-burner.

Folding doors on three sides open onto generous decks draped with grape vines, roses and wisteria.

Matahiwi Barn was lovingly rebuilt from its original heart totara, felled and milled on the property to which it belonged. The exterior is faithful to the original design but the verandahs are an embellishment and home comforts are very much of the 21st century.

Activities

Just over an hour and a half from Wellington and less than ten minutes from the centre of Masterton, Matahiwi Barn is a tranquil country haven within 30 minutes of many of the Wairarapa’s unique attractions and in easy range of the rest.

At Pukaha Mt Bruce wildlife and captive breeding centre you’ll see tuatara, kokako, kiwi, takahe and Manukura, the Persil-white kiwi. Wander through primeval bush at Mt Holdsworth; marvel at the world’s largest collection of airworthy WW1 fighter aircraft (yes, really!) at Masteron’s Hood Aerodrome. Visit wonderful Stonehenge Aotearoa out of Carterton but take the guided tour – you’ll be baffled if you don’t. Constructed on the same scale as its famous namesake but for its unique location, it incorporates ancient Egyptian, Babylonian and Indus Valley astronomy, Polynesian navigation and Celtic and Maori starlore. Explore Carterton’s quirky bric-a-brac stores and Greytown’s chic boutiques and smart cafes.

The vineyards of Martinborough are about 40 minutes off; beaches at Riversdale and Castlepoint’s are an hour away – the latter’s iconic lighthouse is one the two surviving beam lighthouses in New Zealand. Travel a little further around the coast and release your inner child into the rock pools at Mataikona.

Matahiwi Barn is exactly the place for groups of friends wanting an affordable weekend in the lap of rural luxury.
The house has four blissfully comfortable bedrooms (one twin, three Queen with en suite bathrooms) superb art, antiques, sofas and armchairs you won’t want to get out of and the most excellent wood fire. For the serious business of eating – entertainer’s kitchen, gas and wood barbecues and a big old farmhouse table. Oh yes, and a Moore Wilson’s in town. Really, could you need anything more?
The region offers plenty of sights, shopping, cafes and activities ( see www.wairarapanz.com ) But if object of the weekend is laziness then venture outside only to fill the wood basket, admire the garden or marvel at the clarity and brilliance of the stars. Read, play music, talk, drink, laugh, cook, eat like kings, sleep like logs. Wake to a vocal orchestra of birds and get out and about or close your eyes and sleep some more.
As a rule, Wairarapa winters bring frosty mornings and clear bright days but these we cannot guarantee. We can promise the perfect setting and environment for an idyllic country weekend. Just how you spend it is up to you.
Our Winter Weekend rates are for two nights and two days.
